Sultzberger House

Lubec, Maine, 1994-1995

Built. This project is located along the ocean bay shore surrounding the small town of Lubec, Maine, in the most eastward peninsula of the United States, only half an hour from the main land Canadian border and only one bridge away from Campobello Island, also in Canada.

This maritime Victorian house of the late nineteen century has been renovated on both floors. The major intervention occurred on the first floor where, in the back wall of the house, a series of windows have been added together with a new solarium and deck. This takes advantage of the stunning surrounding views of the north ocean bay. The existing fireplace has been replaced by two back to back fireplaces, one in the living room and the other one in the study. An additional fireplace has been added in the new kitchen and dining area. The original designed and built idea of the visually linked fireplaces has been modified by the client during construction. A preliminary study of another fireplace for the living room is also shown here. A new round window on the upper floor spots the sea from this higher level. The complete reworking of the master bathroom, allows a person, when standing in front of the sink’s mirror, to see reflected in it the furthest side of the ocean bay.
