Built. This is the first built project of Studio di Architettura Walter Martinelli, when the office was located in Albino, Italy. It’s a penthouse addition to a residence on two floors owned by a friend of the architect. The new apartment entrance, off the existing stairs, is first visually linked over a new exterior terrace on the back of the building which overlooks the existing garden below. A pocket glass door marks the building enclosure at that location. This entrance area is also defined by a composite floor, a mix of stripes of wood and stones. These are the materials that are used respectively in the interior and on the terrace as a way to define the character of this transitional open space. The high pitched roof is visible once the visitor turns around the entrance toward the main interior space. A new semicircular terrace, off the kitchen area located at the front of the building, projects over the existing flat roof enclosure. New vertical thin plaster finish masonry walls extend horizontally at each side of the new window openings to reach the edges of the existing eaves and, as well, vertically reach the new pitched eaves. These new series of openings frame the surrounding views.
