My Thesis, Borgo San Leonardo

The site of this theoretical project is located in the westward medieval neighborhood of San Leonardo which together with the eastward one of Santa Caterina and the more well known Citta’ Alta form the historical framework of Bergamo, a northern city in Italy. The typological choice proposed on the site has been that of an infill with a sowing effect so to speak, or “ricucitura” in the large wedge-like site at the rear of two historical streets. In addition, a tactical negative mirroring effect along the west facade, takes in the presence of the buildings across the street and, in the large sense, the more recent urban development. Density and permeability inform the character of the design. The facades of the new development borrow the facades of the historical context, from which additional access to the new site is provided at both pedestrian and roof levels. The roof system is a primary element of the project in that it maintains the typological reference of the demolished old industrial building, once on the same premises. This complex was intended to house a regional expo for commercial and industrial trades, a library, an hotel and restaurants.
